POETS iN CONVERSATiON

"Sound, Breath, Rhythm, Repetition: Music, Language, and Transcendence"

In this workshop participants will learn about anaphora, epistrophe, and refrain as the foundation of patterning within poetry. We will examine ways to explore adding repetition to a poem by asking what the central question of the poem is and using the answer as music or vibration to break open image and meaning.

"Narrative Lyric & Lyric Narration"

An exploration of the continuum, spectrum, &/or clouds between narrative & lyric in poetry, & how the two poetic traditions that are so often discussed as separate bleed into each other from all directions. We will discuss the lyric & narrative in poets we love, in our own work, & in generative prompts for participants.

"Saying YES to Detours!"

Participants will join us in a conversation about saying YES to doing things differently: in our writing, in our practice, and in our communities — opening ourselves up to the unexpected, to the surprise, to the thing we have missed, but wouldn’t have known unless we got off the main path. We’ll also discuss barriers to saying, YES (real, imagined), and how to trust new processes while staying true to our voice. Prompts will be provided and through lively discussion and a spirit of openness, we will work toward getting our writing and our mindsets unstuck to see the possibilities where we never thought to look.

"Migrations"

Familial migrations, cultural migrations, and personal migrations. It seems that all people who choose to migrate, do so for a set of similar reasons. We are two African American writers from the American south and these reasons are represented within our poetry. We will read some examples and answer questions about the aesthetics that are revealed in our work.
