In Taoism, the concept of Yin and Yang captures the inherent tension in all things: light and darkness, masculine and feminine, happiness and sorrow, and so on and so forth. It also happens that this kind of contrast and tension is one of the defining elements of a good poem. We will discuss why this is the case, read from some examples, and explore the shape and nature of the different kinds of contrasts, tensions, and conflicts as they appear in nature and in our experience of the world. Time will be given to writing poems that embody these different expressions, followed by discussion about what works well, and why. The goal at the end of this workshop is an embrace of your inner dualities and a greater willingness to use the writing of a poem to argue with yourself.
