How can we deepen our engagement with imagery in poems? What is a poetic image? In this class we will look at a curated packet of poems together and discuss what poetic imagery can do. Likely subtopics of discussion include engaging the senses, approaches to description, surrealism, and ugliness v beauty. After close-reading and conversing, we will play at writing some images ourselves, guided by a series of generative prompts, which students may use to enrich drafts they already have, or create seedlings for possible new poems. Students will read, write, and leave enlivened by the possibilities of language to create vivid sensory experiences via imagery.
